Quick answer
In Australia a one-off AI advisory session with an independent consultant costs in the hundreds, ongoing advisory runs into the low thousands a month, a scoped build from an agency starts in the tens of thousands, and an enterprise programme with a large firm runs to six figures and beyond. AI Consulting is A$1,195 per month + GST, with a call each fortnight, clarity on what to build in Claude or ChatGPT and practical guidance on how to do it. No lock-in. Every price on this page is shown excluding GST.
Compare the whole cost of the work
I would separate these costs before comparing proposals.
- 01
Advice
Time spent understanding the problem and choosing what to do.
- 02
Setup or development
Work needed to configure tools or build an agreed solution.
- 03
Ongoing operation
Software fees, usage, maintenance and the time your team spends checking it.
Ask what is included, who owns each part and which costs continue after the initial work.
What the Australian market actually charges
Almost nobody in this market publishes a price, which is why you are reading a page like this. Here is the honest shape of it, based on what Australian consultants and agencies put in front of clients.
Independent consultants and small advisory practices sit at the bottom of the range. A single session or a short piece of advisory work is priced in the hundreds, and freelancers who publish an hourly rate commonly start in the low hundreds per hour. At this tier you are buying someone's judgment, not a delivery team.
Boutique agencies and mid-sized consultancies quote projects instead. Scoped AI work covering discovery, build and handover runs into the tens of thousands, and the number moves mostly with how many of your systems have to be touched. Ongoing retainers at this tier commonly sit in the thousands per month.
The large firms run programmes. If you are an enterprise with multiple business units, a procurement process and formal governance, you are looking at six figures and up, and part of what you are paying for is the people who manage the engagement itself.
Worth knowing: this demand is new. Monthly Australian searches for "ai consulting" sat between 10 and 20 through most of 2025 and now run around 440. Pricing in a market that young is all over the place, which is exactly why comparing quotes before you know what you need is an expensive habit.
| Engagement model | What you get | Rough range (AUD, ex GST) and when it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One-off advisory session | A conversation with an experienced consultant plus a written prioritised plan | Hundreds. Fits when you need direction, not delivery. |
| Ongoing advisory retainer | Regular calls and written direction as decisions come up | Low thousands a month is common. Fits when you are making AI calls continuously. |
| Hourly consulting | Time-based help with no fixed deliverable | Independents commonly publish rates from the low hundreds per hour. Fits short specific questions or propping up an internal team. |
| Scoped project or build | Discovery, design, build, testing and handover | Tens of thousands and up, driven by how many systems are involved. Fits when you already know what you want built. |
| Enterprise programme | Multiple workstreams, governance, change management, training | Six figures and beyond. Fits large organisations with many teams and formal procurement. |
What actually drives the price up
Five things move the number, and only one of them is the consultant's reputation.
- Whether anyone builds anything. Advice is cheap compared to delivery. The moment code, integrations and hosting enter the scope, you have crossed from hundreds into tens of thousands.
- How many systems have to talk. One tool used well is a training problem. Six systems stitched together is an engineering project, and it is priced like one.
- Your data situation. If the information lives in spreadsheets, inboxes and someone's head, the first chunk of any engagement is spent getting to a starting line.
- Compliance and risk load. Financial services, health and anyone handling sensitive client records need controls and review that a five-person marketing agency does not, and that time gets billed.
- Who sits in the room. A partner-led team at a large firm costs a multiple of one experienced independent, and for a small business it usually buys process rather than better answers.
The trap in all of this is paying for delivery when you needed a decision. Plenty of Australian businesses sign a build because building is what got quoted, not because a build was the right answer. Sorting the decision first is the cheapest step in the whole sequence.
What you should get at each price level
If you are paying in the hundreds, you should walk away with a written prioritised plan, a named first project, tool recommendations with reasons attached, and a clear list of what not to do yet. You should not be handed a build proposal dressed up as a strategy.
If you are paying low thousands a month, you should get continuity: someone who remembers your context, who you can put a decision to before you commit to it, and who gives you written follow-ups rather than vague encouragement.
If you are paying tens of thousands, you should get something working in production, documentation, a handover your team can actually maintain, and a named person accountable for it. A slide deck is not a deliverable at that price.
If you are paying six figures, the programme should include change management, role-specific training and governance, because at that scale adoption is the risk, not the technology.
My pricing, in full
AI Consulting is A$1,195 per month + GST, with a call each fortnight, clarity on what to build in Claude or ChatGPT and practical guidance on how to do it. No lock-in.
Custom development is A$150/hour + GST, with a separate project scope, estimated hours and terms before work starts.
We agree the work, estimated hours and engagement terms before starting.
GST, invoicing and what the numbers here mean
Every price on this page and across this site is shown excluding GST. GST in Australia is 10 per cent and it is added on top of the fee at invoice time, so budget for that when you compare quotes. Australian consultants quote both ways, so when you are comparing two proposals, check which basis each one is using before you decide one is cheaper.
A tax invoice from an Australian supplier should carry an ABN. How the GST on a professional services invoice affects your own return is a question for your accountant, not for me.
Red flags when you compare Australian quotes
- A price arrives before anyone has asked what your business does.
- Small-end pricing is only available on application. If a session costs hundreds, there is no reason to hide it.
- The deliverable is described as a strategy with no named first project and no sequence.
- A monthly retainer with no exit terms written down.
- Anyone quoting you a specific percentage saving before they have seen a single one of your workflows.
- The recommended tool happens to be one the consultant resells. Ask the question directly, it is a fair one.
